Coaching, mentoring, training, and counseling – how can I tell the difference? Here are some simple explanations…
Training – you pass your knowledge onto someone else
Mentoring – you share your wisdom and experiences with someone else
Counseling – you help people deal with issues that occurred in their past
Coaching – you lead/encourage the person to own their growth and actions steps
In coaching the person, not the trainer/mentor/counselor, is the main voice throughout the time together. In coaching, the you and the client are coequals who work together to bring about change.
I realize this is a very short description, but I am a firm believer that in a lot of situations – less is more.
