I am always looking for resources that will help me to become a better Christ follower, leader, or just a person in general. The other day I was searching the internet for scriptures that can use in my prayer time as I pray for the leaders in my life.
By leaders, I mean, individuals who have influence in my life and in the lives of those around me. For example, my lead pastor is on this list. The superintendent of the Illinois Assemblies of God is on this list. The small group leaders and volunteer team leaders at my church are on this list. Other pastors from my area are on this list. I think you get the point.
I found an article written by Andrew Mason entitled 3 Scriptures I Pray Over My Leaders. In this article, Andy discusses how he uses these scriptures as a means of praying over the leaders in his life. You can click on the name of the article and it will take you to the full article, but I am going to summarize it for you.
The first scripture Andy uses is Ephesians 1:15-17 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him….
He points out that in this scripture the actual Greek translation for “knowledge” leans more toward a relationship than information. So, when you pray this pray for your leaders you are asking that they would have an intimate relationship with God.
The second scripture that he mentions is Colossians 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding….
Andy points out that this scripture is asking for God to fill your leader with the knowledge of His Will and that your leader would make wise decisions based on that knowledge.
The last scripture he shares is Deuteronomy 28:8 The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you..
This is a prayer of blessing. Pray that God will bless the leader’s job, family, marriage, etc. This is a very practical prayer.
I hope that you have found this helpful as you pray for those who are in leadership in your life.
