I am blessed! I get to help people discover who they are in Christ. How cool is that! I get to come alongside people and help them discover how they fit into the body of Christ. Words cannot describe how much fun I have helping someone discover how God wired them and then help them to get started in their area of strength.
In Romans 12:6, Paul tells us that we all have abilities to do certain things well. Tom Paterson says in his book, Living the Life You Were Meant to Live, “Show me a person who doesn’t know his talents or hasn’t developed them for service to others, and I will show you a person who has little sense of purpose, meaning, motivation, and value.”
Those are some pretty strong words! However, if you read them closely, there is a lot of truth to be found. Over the course of my careers, in both the mental health field and the ministry, I have had the chance to be around all kinds of talented people. It is my observation that when these talented people live a selfish life, they are very unhappy.
I have also observed people living a life completely unaware of how they can be a blessing to the world around them. They too are not happy. It is a so hard to see someone who possesses so much ability and yet they haven’t put that ability to good use.
Look at this quote from Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life…
God has given you abilities that are linked to what He wants you to do with your life. Knowing and doing what God wants you to do is a giant step to increasing the happiness in your life.
So when you are trying to discover your S.H.A.P.E., you need to ask yourself some questions…
“What am I good at?”
“What do I enjoy doing?”
“What does not feel like work?”
“What have others told me that I make look easy?”
Once you are able to get a better picture of what you are good at, look for opportunities to serve others with those abilities. Ask your Pastor what opportunities are available that match your abilities. If one is not available, maybe you can be the catalyst to start a new ministry!
It my strong belief that you will never be truly happy until you discover God’s plan for your life and then start living it out daily. Discovering your abilities is a huge step in this process.
