Smiles are contagious. Don’t believe me? Make it a point to genuinely smile at the people you come in contact with and see what happens. Chances are they will smile back.
In Dale Carnegie’s Book How to Win Friends & Influence People, he dedicates an entire chapter to the power of the smile. He writes, Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, “I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you.”
A smile has the power to brighten a person’s day. Case in point, have you ever had a baby smile at you? How did that make you feel? How did that impact your thoughts? It is amazing that something so simple can have such a profound impact on a person.
Here’s another quote from Mr. Carnegie, It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. it is what you think about. The thoughts you entertain directly impact your happiness. Shakespeare said, There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.
Let’s be honest, it’s easy to find the negative and dwell on it. And the more you dwell on negative things, the more it shows on your face. If you really want to impact those around you, change your thinking and dwell on positive things. Before too long, those positive thoughts will break through on your face in the form of a smile. And once that happens, you will brighten the lives of those around you.
How have you experienced the power of a smile?
